HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Logan Square, IL | Crossroads Chimney Sweep
We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning and liner service across Logan Square, from Palmer Square to the boulevards. What sets our HeatShield work apart here is that we have been inside hundreds of the neighborhood’s century-old party-wall flues, so we know how ceramic liners behave in brick that was laid before indoor plumbing was standard. Call (877) 265-6720 for a free estimate.
HeatShield is a cast-in-place ceramic lining system, and we have been servicing and repairing it in Logan Square long enough to know when a liner can be restored and when it has to come out. We are an independent HeatShield service provider, not authorized or sponsored by the manufacturer, which means we can be straight with you about whether a HeatShield reline is the right fix or whether a different approach fits your chimney better. If your Logan Square chimney has a HeatShield liner that is spalling, cracked, or leaking at the crown, we can assess it and tell you what is actually going on inside the flue before any money changes hands.
Why Logan Square Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
HeatShield ceramic liners are only as good as the prep work underneath them. In Logan Square, that prep work matters more than most places because so many of our chimneys have original clay tile liners that were installed when the house was built, and those tiles have been through a century of Chicago freeze-thaw cycling. A HeatShield pour sized to an original flue that has already lost mortar joints will delaminate. We catch that before the pour, not after.
Norm Szczepanski grew up a few blocks from Kosciuszko Park and has been working chimneys in the northwest side neighborhoods for going on two decades. He learned the trade through the building trades programs at Triton College, then spent years on everything from century-old brick fireboxes to zero-clearance inserts before starting Crossroads. Around Logan Square he is known for straightforward inspections. He will tell you exactly what your flue liner looks like, whether it is a HeatShield resurfacing job or a full Gelco liner replacement, and why it matters.
We also stock what Logan Square flues actually need. Genuine HeatShield ceramic mix and TherMix insulating backfill for relines, quality aftermarket stainless caps and dampers where they fit better than OEM, and the camera gear to show you what we are seeing before we recommend anything. No vague “you need a new liner” without footage to back it up.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Logan Square
- Liner delamination and surface spalling. When a HeatShield pour was sized to an original flue that had already lost mortar joints to Logan Square’s freeze-thaw cycling, the ceramic layer can separate from the tile behind it. We see this on two- and three-flats along Kedzie and Palmer Square regularly. The fix is a section rebuild, not a full re-pour, in most cases.
- Cracking at the crown transition. Exterior brick chimneys that got a HeatShield reline but no crown coating or waterproofing afterward are vulnerable to meltwater working behind the ceramic layer. Chicago winters do not go easy on exposed brick crowns. We repair the damaged section and coat the crown so the freeze-thaw cycle does not reopen the same crack next season.
- Offset and breech connections left unsealed. An original HeatShield pour that did not seal the offset properly can leak flue gases into party-wall cavities shared between adjacent two-flat units. This is a code issue and a safety issue, and it is one of the first things we check on Logan Square chimneys that serve multiple units.
- Debonding around the damper frame and smoke shelf. If the old firebox mortar was not rebuilt before the HeatShield liner was cast in place, the ceramic can separate from the damper frame. We rebuild that transition properly and reseal the liner so smoke stays in the flue where it belongs.
- Cross-connection between shared flues. In tightly packed Logan Square two-flats, one neighbor’s smoke can backdraft into the other’s living room if the party-wall flue has gaps or a failed liner. We camera the shared chase and check for cross-connection before and after any HeatShield work.
HeatShield Service in Logan Square: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here is something a generic HeatShield page will not tell you. Because so many Palmer Square and Logan Boulevard two-flats share party-wall flues, a HeatShield reline in one unit can change the draft in the neighbor’s flue. That is not a theoretical concern. When you pour a new oval ceramic liner into a shared brick chase, you reduce the cross-section of that flue, which changes how air moves through the entire stack. If the neighboring unit’s flue was already marginal, the change can push combustion gases backward into their living space. We camera the shared chase before and after any liner work in Logan Square to verify there is no cross-connection and that both units still draft correctly. Most chimney companies do not even look at the neighbor’s side. We have to, given how many of these buildings share a single brick stack.
The Logan Square Boulevards landmark district adds another layer. If your chimney is visible from the street and needs a repair that changes its exterior profile, the commission may need to review the scope before work starts. A HeatShield reline is an interior repair, so it typically does not trigger landmark review on its own. But if we are also rebuilding a crown or repointing brick that faces the boulevard, that can fall under commission purview. We flag that early so there are no surprises mid-job.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Logan Square
We service the full HeatShield product range: the cast-in-place Ceramic Lining System in round and oval profiles, the HeatShield Insulation Mix and TherMix insulating backfill, and the HeatShield Resurfacing System for restoring deteriorated clay tile liners. We also work with custom oval liners sized for older narrow masonry flues, which Logan Square has in abundance.
For any reline we use genuine HeatShield ceramic mix and insulating backfill so the system performs to its rated specification. Where aftermarket parts are a better functional fit, like stainless caps and dampers, we use quality components rather than chasing OEM branding for its own sake. On older Logan Square flues we will always assess whether an existing HeatShield liner can be repaired and resealed before recommending a full re-pour. Restore, do not replace, when the liner still has a serviceable structure underneath it.

AfterHeatShield Service Pricing in Logan Square
HeatShield resurfacing in Logan Square typically runs between $2,500 and $5,000 depending on the length of the flue, the degree of deterioration, and whether we are working on a single family home or a two- or three-flat with a taller stack. A full cast-in-place HeatShield Ceramic Lining System installation generally falls between $3,500 and $7,000. Sectional repairs of a failed HeatShield liner, which is often all a Logan Square chimney actually needs, are less. The exact number depends on what the camera shows.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Logan Square
Does a HeatShield reline on my Logan Square two-flat require landmark approval?
Usually not. A HeatShield reline is an interior flue repair and does not change the exterior profile of the chimney, so it typically does not require Chicago Landmark Commission review. Exterior work like crown rebuilding or brick repointing on a chimney visible from a designated boulevard can trigger review, and we will tell you upfront if your project falls into that category. Call (877) 265-6720 to discuss your specific building.
My neighbor’s fireplace smokes into my living room – can a HeatShield liner fix that?
It can, if the smoke is coming through gaps in a shared party-wall flue. We see this in Logan Square two-flats where the original clay tile liner has cracked and flue gases are crossing between units. A HeatShield liner can seal the shared chase and stop the cross-connection, assuming the firebox and damper are sound. We camera the chase first to confirm the path before recommending a reline. Call (877) 265-6720 to schedule an inspection.
Can HeatShield be applied over my original clay tile liner, or does the tile have to come out?
HeatShield is designed to be applied over existing clay tile liners, not to replace them. The ceramic mix is cast in place against the tile surface to create a new, seamless liner. The catch is that the original tile has to be structurally sound enough to support the pour. If the tile has already collapsed or shifted badly, a full reline with a new liner system, like a DuraFlex flexible liner, may be the better call. We will show you the tile condition on camera before recommending anything.
How soon after a HeatShield reline should I waterproof the chimney?
As soon as the ceramic has cured, which is typically within a day or two. The crown and exterior brick are the weak points. A HeatShield liner seals the inside of the flue, but meltwater can still get behind the ceramic if the crown is cracked and the brick is porous. We recommend crown coating and chimney waterproofing immediately after a reline, not as a separate future project. Call (877) 265-6720 and we will bundle it into one visit.
Will a HeatShield liner handle my wood-burning fireplace insert, or do I need something else?
A HeatShield liner can handle a wood-burning insert if the flue is sized correctly for the appliance and the existing tile is sound enough to support the pour. Inserts run hotter than open fireplaces, so the liner has to be rated for the higher flue gas temperatures. If your insert requires a larger or different profile than the existing flue allows, a DuraFlex flexible liner might be a better fit. We will confirm the sizing during the inspection. Call (877) 265-6720 for a free estimate.
